Covering Gaza – The War and Journalist Trauma with Manisha Ganguly

After 470 days of war in Gaza and a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas on January 15, the end of the conflict still isn’t in sight. Manisha Ganguly, The Guardian’s visual forensics lead and investigations correspondent, spoke with iMEdD about the huge challenges of covering this war. Her investigations included the heavy toll on Gaza’s medical infrastructure, especially in the north. As current wars are increasingly documented through open-source investigations, Ganguly emphasizes the fact that OSINT reporters are constantly flooded with graphic content, leading to “vicarious trauma.” At the same time, this war is not only a battle for truth for Palestinian journalists but an endurance test of their mental resilience.

The interview took place during the 2024 iMEdD International Journalism Forum in Athens.
