Investigating the secret corporate donations to German political parties

Gianna-Carina Grün, head of the data journalism team at DW, tells us about her research into the secret donations of German companies to German political parties.

From 2013 to 2017, German political parties received more than 200 million euros in donations, yet only 13 million was immediately reported. A DW investigation published in 2017 revealed how German companies systematically hide donations to German political parties.

Gianna – Carina Grün explains the stages of the research, the challenges she faced and how, by merging two databases, she discovered the methods German companies used to make donations to political parties, bypassing the legislation that requires them to be immediately reported.

Gianna was one of the presenters of the “Data Journalism” module, which is part of the “Newsroom Essentials” program, designed by the Columbia School of Journalism and hosted by iMEdD within the context of the first thematic cycle of the Ideas Zone for this year.

The interview with Gianna was conducted as part of the “Newsroom Essentials” program, which took place in October 2019.
